2011 SCHOLARSHIP INFORMATION

The Scholarship Committee of the Irish American Home Society is pleased to announce the distribution of as many as four (4) annual scholarships.   The scholarships being awarded this year include:

Twelve Hundred Dollar ($1,200.00) Scholarships to high school senior(s) matriculating as full time undergraduate students at an accredited college or  university granting an Associate or Bachelor’s degree.

Twelve Hundred Dollar ($1,200.00) Scholarships to full time undergraduate student(s) presently attending an accredited college or university and continuing for at least one more academic year.

ELIGIBILITY
Candidates qualifying for this scholarship must be members or sons or daughters of “Members in good standing” (paid to date) of the Irish American Home Society.   This membership must be active for the past three years for eligibility.

STANDARDS FOR CONSIDERATION
An applicant for the Irish American Home Society scholarship will be judged on membership years, scholarship, extracurricular activities, letters of recommendation and essay submitted.   The Irish American Home Society, through this program seeks students who show an appreciation of the value of an education and who are willing to work to achieve success.

REQUIRED DOCUMENTATION
Students wishing to apply for the Irish American Home Society Scholarship must submit the following documentation to the committee along with the application form.

            High School Senior

1.         Official school transcript including first semester senior grades, class rank and College Board scores.

            2.         Activity sheet including all extracurricular activities such as sports, class
                        involvement, club involvement, and community service.

            3.         Two (2) letters of recommendation, one must be from the principal or
                        counselor and the second from any person of your choice.

            4.         Essay.

The Glastonbury Irish-American Society has approximately 2,174 members. Membership is open to any person 21 years or older, and of Irish descent, or a spouse of a member in good standing.

Annual dues for new members are $70., plus a $50 initiation fee for a total of $120. Annual dues after 1 year are $70.

Prospective members must fill out the membership form available at the IAH Society and be sponsored by a current Club member at the monthly, Tuesday Sponsor meeting. This is held each Tuesday before the 2nd Friday of the month at 7:00 p.m. at the IAH Society, and the sponsor and prospective member must both be in attendance. New members are then sworn-in on Friday at 8:00 p.m., of the same week, at the IAH Society. New members must be in attendance at this time, and dues must be paid at this time.

Any club member with 25 years of continuous membership and having reached the age of 65 are eligible for life membership. Call Debbie Cone (860) 519-1085 for more information.

If you are sponsoring a candidate for membership, be advised that the prospective members must appear for screening by the Board of Directors at the regular monthly meeting of the Board, which takes place on Tuesday before the monthly membership meeting. Screening will take place at 7:00 p.m. No candidates will be screened on the night of the membership meeting.

From I-91 Northbound

• Take exit 25 - 26 Rte. 3 North (Glastonbury / Old Wethersfield)
• Bear left for Exit 25 (Rte. 3 North / Glastonbury)
• At junction of Rte. 2, stay in right lane and take Rte. 2 East towards Norwich
• Stay in right lane and get off at Exit 8 (Rte.94 / Hebron Ave.)
• At end of ramp, take left onto Rte. 94 / Hebron Ave.
• At second traffic light, take right onto Oak St. (Shell Station is on the corner)
• Go approximately 1/4 mile on Oak St. and take a left onto Commerce St.
• The Irish-American Home will be on the right just before the Rte. 2 overpass

From I-91 Southbound
• Take I-84 East exit in Hartford
• Follow to Rte. 2 towards Norwich, Exit 8
• Get off at Exit 8 (Rte. 94 / Hebron Ave.)
• At second traffic light, take right onto Oak St. (Shell Station is on the corner)
• Go approximately 1/4 mile on Oak St. and take a left onto Commerce St.
• The Irish-American Home will be on the right just before the Rte. 2 overpass

From I-84 Eastbound
• Take Exit 55 (Rte. 2 East) in East Hartford
• Follow Rte. 2 to Exit 8 (Rte. 94 / Hebron Ave.)
• Get off at Exit 8 (Rte. 94 / Hebron Ave.)
• At end of ramp, take a left onto Rte. 94 (Hebron Ave.)
• At second traffic light, take right onto Oak St. (Shell Station is on the corner)
