MASS IN COMMEMORATION OF THE GREAT HUNGER

  • 05/15/2016

  • Upstairs Hall

Several years ago, the Irish government decreed that the victims of the Irish Famine be commemorated each year on a designated day in Ireland and, hopefully, by the Irish abroad as well.  People of Irish heritage across the globe are asked to participate in Masses and other memorial services. This international event recognizes the victims of the Great Hunger (an Gorta Mor) including those who refused to abandon their faith when offered food and those who fled Ireland in order to survive.  The Irish American Home Society invites its members and others of Irish descent to mark this event with a Commemorative Mass, which will be celebrated on Sunday, May 15, 2016, 9:00 a.m. in our upstairs hall.  Those attending are asked to bring a donation of food, to be given to the Malta House Food Pantry in Hartford.  Suggested food items are rice, dried or canned beans, sweet potatoes, white potatoes, cereal, onions, macaroni & cheese, canned vegetables and canned evaporated milk.  Mass will be followed by an Irish breakfast in our downstairs lounge.  The cost for breakfast is $12 for adults and $8 for children.  We encourage all to join us May 15th.  It is the least we can do considering the depths of the suffering and sacrifices endured by the Irish people.
